The test can identify the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA in a blood sample, which can help detect nasopharynx cancer.

Nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) is the malignant changes in the tissues of the nasopharynx. This type of cancer is more common in the southern part of China than in Western countries. In 2016, NPC was the sixth commonest cancer in men and sixteenth in women. It accounted for 2.6% of all new cancer cases.

EBV is associated with nasopharynx cancer, check for early detection. EBV serology test is currently the most commonly used screening tool.

Risk factors of nasopharyngeal cancer include:

  • Family history of nasopharyngeal cancer
  • Smoking
  • High intake of preserved and fermented food e.g. salted fish
  • Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Infection
  • Occupational exposure to wood dust, formaldehyde and chemical fumes
  • The practice of burning incense sticks
  • Immunocompromised state

Why are salt-cured foods a high-risk factor?

When you cook salt-cured foods, chemicals are often released that may enter your nasal cavity, as a result, it will increase the risk of nasopharyngeal cancer.

What are the symptoms?

In its early stages, there might not be any symptoms. However, possible noticeable symptoms of nasopharyngeal cancer include the following.

  • Early-stage symptoms usually include hearing loss, frequent ear infection, pain in the ear, ringing in your ears.
  • Symptoms then develop into nose block, nasal congestion, and bloody discharge from your nose.
  • Late-stage symptoms:  a lump in your neck caused by a swollen lymph node, headaches, numbness on the face, double vision, stiffness on the jaws.
