Liver

The liver is located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen,
beneath the diaphragm and above the stomach, right kidney,
and intestines. It has two main lobes (right and left)
and is connected to the gallbladder, where bile is stored,
as well as to the pancreas and intestines.

Functions of the Liver

The liver performs a wide array of essential functions:

1. Metabolism

• Carbohydrate Metabolism: Glycogen storage and glucose release.
• Lipid Metabolism: Cholesterol synthesis, lipoprotein production, and triglyceride storage.
• Protein Metabolism: Deamination of amino acids, urea formation, and plasma protein synthesis.

• Drug Metabolism: Modification and breakdown of drugs.

3. Bile Production

Common Liver Diseases

1. Hepatitis: Inflammation of the liver, often caused by viral infections (Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E) but also by alcohol, toxins, and autoimmune diseases.
2. Cirrhosis: Advanced liver disease characterized by scarring (fibrosis) and impaired liver function, often resulting from chronic hepatitis or long-term alcohol abuse.
