Prevenar 13® adopts the latest conjugation technology, which induces immune memory and hence provides long-lasting protection with one convenient dose to individuals aged 2 or above. It is included in the Hong Kong Childhood Immunization Programme for children aged below 2 and recommended by HK Centre for Health Protection for elderly aged 65 or above. Particularly, the elderly with high-risk conditions such as. chronic disease patients should receive Prevenar13® as the priority pneumococcal vaccine. US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends Prevenar13® for use as a priority shot among elderly aged 65 or above.
Pneumococcal disease refers to any illness caused by pneumococcal bacteria. These bacteria can cause many types of illnesses, including pneumonia, which is an infection of the lungs. Pneumococcal bacteria are one of the most common causes of pneumonia. Pneumococcal vaccination can protect both children and adults from pneumococcal disease. Pneumococcal disease is caused by bacteria that can spread from person to person through close contact.
Pneumococcal infection represents a wide range of diseases caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae / pneumococcus). More than 90 serotypes have been identified.
Transmission of the disease: It can be transmitted by droplet spread and contact with respiratory secretions; direct contact is another way of transmission.
Effects of the disease: Causes a wide spectrum of diseases, including:
Adverse Reactions: Most people have no serious reactions after receiving PCV. Occasionally there may be mild fever (usually occur within 3 days after vaccination) or slight redness or swelling around the injection site, but these will gradually subside in a few days. If fever or discomforts persist, or abnormal breathing is observed, please consult a doctor immediately.
