💡 What is the Thyroid Gland?

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck. It produces two essential hormones: Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroxine (T4). These hormones regulate key bodily functions such as metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, weight control, emotional stability, and energy levels.
When the thyroid produces too much or too little hormone, it can lead to serious health conditions.

Thyroid disorders primarily fall into two categories:
Hormonal dysfunction – where the thyroid produces either an excessive or insufficient amount of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4)
Enlargement of the gland – commonly referred to as a “goiter,” this may involve general swelling of the thyroid or the presence of nodules and lumps

Overactive thyroid function can lead to hyperthyroidism, while underactive function may result in hypothyroidism.
