Why do you need this test?

HPV infection can be fatal

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 150 types. Around 40 of these viruses infect the genital area of men and women. The presence of HPV has been implicated in >99% of cervical cancers worldwide. It is also associated with other types of genital cancer.

HPV is highly contagious

Sexually transmitted infection with HPV is extremely common, with estimates of up to 75% of all women being exposed to HPV at some point. However, almost all infected women will mount an effective immune response and clear the infection within 2 years without any long-term health consequences.

What is high-risk and low-risk HPV?

Some HPVs are ‘high-risk’ types as they can cause cancers. Others are ‘low-risk’ types and can cause genital warts. Studies suggest that up to 75% of all sexually active people will eventually be infected with HPV some time in their lives. Most people who become infected with HPV do not have symptoms and the infection clears on its own. Cervical cancer may develop if there is persistent infection of the high risk HPV.

How can I lower my risk of getting infected with HPV?

  • Limiting the number of sexual partners, or choosing a sexual partner who has had no or few sexual partners.
  • Condoms may also lower the risk of getting HPV but HPV can still infect areas that are not covered by a condom.
  • HPV DNA Genotyping Test
  • HPV Vaccination
