Anemia is a condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body’s tissues.

Red blood cells carry oxygen to all of the body’s tissues, so a low red blood cell count indicates that the amount of oxygen in your blood is below the normal range. Many of the symptoms of anemia are caused by decreased oxygen delivery to the body’s vital tissues and organs.

Causes:

  • Your body is not producing red blood cells
  • Blood loss
  • Your body destroys red blood cells
  • An inability to absorb iron.

Symptoms

The signs of anemia can be so mild that you might not even notice them. Symptoms may include:

  • Dizziness, lightheadedness
  • Fast or unusual heartbeat
  • Headache
  • Pain, including in your bones, chest, belly, and joints
  • Shortness of breath
  • Skin that’s pale or yellow
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Tiredness or weakness

Types of Anemia

  1. Iron deficiency anemia
  2. Aplastic anemia
  3. Sickle cell anemia
  4. Thalassemia
  5. Vitamin deficiency anemia

The main function of iron is to produce heme in the body. Heme is an essential element of red blood cells and is responsible for transporting oxygen to various body tissues. Therefore, inadequate iron intake would cause the body to produce an insufficient amount of red blood cells, leading to iron deficiency anemia.
