According to the World Health Organization (WHO), HPV type 16 and 18 (high-risk types) cause around 70% of cervical cancers and pre-cancerous cervical lesions; whereas non-cancerous type 6 and 11 can cause genital warts and respiratory papillomatosis (a disease in which tumours grow in the air passages leading from the nose and mouth into the lungs).
HPV Vaccinations
One of the most effective ways to prevent HPV infections is HPV vaccination, and the most comprehensive model in the market currently is the 9-valent HPV Vaccine (Gardasil 9). This vaccination is recommended for young children as well, and has been included in the Hong Kong Childhood Immunisation Program.
Gardasil 9, a nine-valent HPV offers protection against 9 common types of HPV types: 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58. According to the CDC, HPV vaccines have high efficacy (nearly 100%) in preventing cervical cancer.
