Basic Female Checkup items includes:
Pap Smear
Ultrasound of Pelvis
Pap Smear (Cervical Cytology Test)
A Pap smear is a screening test used to detect early abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix. Identifying these changes at an early stage allows for timely treatment before they develop into cervical cancer. It is important to note that a Pap smear is not a diagnostic test for cervical cancer.
This test is recommended as a routine screening for women without vaginal symptoms, with the aim of detecting early cellular abnormalities. Approximately 90% of Pap smear results are normal. If abnormal cells are identified, further diagnostic investigations will be required to assess the severity of the condition.
In most cases, early-stage abnormalities can be effectively managed with simple outpatient treatments, which are generally less complex and have a high success rate. If left untreated, these early cellular changes may progress to cancer. Any abnormal findings from screening tests must be confirmed through appropriate diagnostic procedures to determine the presence and extent of cervical disease.
Preparation Before the pap smear checkup:
Avoid undergoing a Pap smear during menstruation.
Within 48 hours prior to the test, avoid vaginal douching, use of spermicides, vaginal medications, and sexual intercourse, as these may obscure or wash away abnormal cells.
If you experience unusual vaginal discharge, consult a doctor and treat any infection before proceeding with the test.
Pelvic Ultrasound
A pelvic ultrasound is used to evaluate the uterus, ovaries, and other reproductive organs for abnormalities. It can help detect conditions such as ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, endometriosis (chocolate cysts), and uterine fibroids.
Compared to manual pelvic examination, pelvic ultrasound provides higher accuracy and can detect even very small lesions, such as fibroids measuring as little as 3–5 mm.
The procedure is simple and non-invasive. During the examination, the patient exposes the lower abdomen while a water-based gel is applied. A transducer is then moved across the abdomen to assess the pelvic organs. The process is painless, involves no radiation, and does not cause discomfort.
Breast Ultrasound
Breast ultrasound operates on the same principle as other ultrasound examinations, using high-frequency sound waves to scan the breast and underarm (axillary) regions. The reflected sound waves are converted into images, allowing visualisation of internal breast structures.
This imaging modality enables doctors to assess the location, size, and characteristics of breast lumps. It is particularly effective in differentiating between malignant tumours and benign conditions such as cysts, fibrocystic changes, or fibroadenomas. As such, breast ultrasound is an essential component of breast health screening.
Breast ultrasound has a sensitivity of approximately 91–93% and an accuracy of 81–95%.
