What is Thrombosis?

Thrombosis refers to the formation of a blood clot within a blood vessel. When a blood vessel is damaged or ruptured, the body naturally forms a clot to stop bleeding. However, when blood flow becomes slow or when other substances obstruct the vessel and impair normal circulation, abnormal clot formation may occur, leading to blockage of the blood vessels.

Common Conditions Caused by Blood Clots:

  • Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack) – Occurs when a coronary artery is blocked by a blood clot, preventing blood from reaching the heart muscle and the rest of the body.
  • Stroke – Occurs when a blood clot suddenly blocks a blood vessel in the brain, causing an ischemic stroke due to insufficient blood supply.
  • Pulmonary Embolism – Occurs when a pulmonary artery becomes blocked, usually by a clot that has traveled from the veins of the legs or pelvis. Severe cases can be life-threatening.

Common Symptoms:

  • Chest discomfort or tightness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness in the arms or legs
  • Cold, numb, or tingling limbs
  • Leg swelling
